Young Man Wouldn’t Let Go Of The New Testament
Ministry Update April 1, 2018
Friday night before Thomas joined me witnessing downtown, I handed out several tracts. A group of guys all took tracts. One of the guys stopped and thanked me for being out there. He told me that his mom has been after him to get right with God. I told him that his mom is telling right, he needs to get right with God. Then surprisingly, the guy admitted to me that he is a drunk (his own words). I exhorted him that he needs to repent and trust Jesus (Galatians 5:21).
I gave him a New Testament and he said that he’d read it. Then he told me that he knows John 3:16, so I suggested that he quote it. The young man did so. I was trying to explain what the verse means, that God sacrificed His only Son in order that we might be saved. But there isn’t universal salvation. In order to illustrate receiving salvation, I tried to take the New Testament back from him. But the young man wouldn’t let go of the New Testament.
He said no man, I’m going to read it. I apologized and told him that I was just trying to make a point. He let go of it and I explained that I had given him the New Testament, but that he had to receive it, he had to receive the gift. God gives us the gift of salvation, but we must receive it through repentance and faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9). The young man assured me that he will read the New Testament. I reminded him that we are not guaranteed our next breath and that his mom is right that he needs to get right with God. He gave me a fist bump and walked on. One of his friends stood around the whole time we talked and then he asked if he could have a Bible too. I said sure and gladly gave him one.
Spiritual Darkness
Thomas handed out tracts and talked to people. One guy told him that there is spiritual darkness downtown and we agree with that assessment. It’s hard for some people to believe this about the Bible Belt, but it is true. We have a drug and alcohol problem in Springfield as well as sexual immorality. Satan has many people blinded (2 Corinthians 4:4). That’s why its so important to share the Gospel with others. There is hope in Jesus Christ alone (Romans 5:1-2). Earlier a guy who appeared to be high took a tract and the woman walking behind him seemed to be drunk. But she also took a tract and she read it as she walked along.
While I brought a message about how to share the Gospel, one mocker walked by yelling f you. One driver honked and mouthed off as they drove by. A woman who didn’t agree with the message stood still in the parking lot across the street for a while. Later on a police officer walked down to the corner and listened for a little bit. I think he was trying to determine if I was too loud. I don’t think I am with a 25 watt voice booster. One person walked by and said Amen. Another encourager stopped while I was open-air preaching. I asked him if he goes to church locally and he said he doesn’t. So I invited him to visit Crossway Baptist Church this Sunday for Easter Sunday.
(My wife and I were out of state earlier in the week, so I didn’t get to witness at MSU. These updates are given to encourage Christians to share the Gospel with others.)
