What’s Your Opinion On Homosexuality?
Ministry Update January 19, 2020
I was wrapping up open-air preaching at Missouri State University on Wednesday when a student walked up and asked, “What’s your opinion on homosexuality?” My reply was, “It doesn’t matter what my opinion is. The Bible is very clear on it and it’s a sin. First Corinthians 6:9-10 covers this and it’s not just the sin of homosexuality, it covers sexual relations outside of marriage, adultery, drunkards, thieves, idolaters. Every single person on earth falls into at least one of these categories.”
Claire wanted to see 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, so I gladly turned to these verses in the Bible. After reading them, I continued on with verse 11 which states: And such were some of you, but you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ by the Spirit of our God. It doesn’t matter if your sin is homosexuality, adultery or idolatry, when God grants a person repentance and faith in Jesus, they become a new creature. When you surrender your life to Jesus, He cleans you up. God convicts you through the power of the Holy Spirit when you are living contrary to God.
Homosexuality Is A Sin Along With Other Sexual Sins
Still not convinced that women having sexual relations with women is a sin (because it doesn’t specifically state women in 1 Corinthians, 6:9-10, I pointed out to Claire that Romans 1 specifically mentions women in Romans 1:26. In fact, the Apostle Paul says that homosexuality is unnatural. It goes against nature. God’s design is for one man and one woman to be married until one of them dies. Homosexuality, lesbianism goes against nature. It is an abomination to God. I also pointed out Leviticus 18 and the fact that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah over homosexuality.
Then I showed Romans 1:24-32 to Claire and read these verses out loud. The Bible says that God turns you over to a debased mind or a reprobate mind. I continued that I listen to sermons by an old-time preacher named Rolfe Barnard that used to say that he thought very few homosexuals are ever saved because God has turned them over to a reprobate mind. I made very clear that I wasn’t saying it was impossible, but very tough.
Then I explained that a depraved or reprobate mind means that you rebel against God, you run so far and so hard away from Him that He says fine. You don’t want His general grace; God removes His hand from you. So you are living in sin, running as fast and far away from God as possible, what in the world is going to make you stop, turn around and cry out to God? Claire couldn’t think of an answer for that. No one comes to Jesus unless God the Father draws them to Him (John 6:44).
What About Transgenderism?
“What about transgenderism?” Claire asked. “You wanted to know my opinion when you first walked up and I wouldn’t give it. Now I will. I think transgenderism is an even worse sin than homosexuality.” Claire’s eyebrows raised in surprise to my answer. I continued, “Think about it. People that are transgender, are telling God, the great Creator God that He made a mistake!” It’s like saying “God, you made me a man, but I’m really a woman; so I’m going to live as a woman.”
“It’s appointed unto people once to die and then the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). If Bruce Jenner continues like he is doing and dies in his sin, his rebellion against God, I don’t believe that he will stand before God as Caitlyn Jenner. God made him a man and I believe that he will stand before God as a man and have to give an account for living as though God made a mistake when God made him. It’s like spitting in the eye of God.”
Are You Transgender?
Our conversation continued on for over 20 minutes. A couple of more times Claire brought up transgenderism again. So finally I said, “Are you transgender?” Claire replied, “Yes, I’m trans. Now that you know this, will you respect me as a person and refer to me as she or her?” I honestly replied, “I don’t know. I just met you and I don’t know you.
You told me your name is Claire and I don’t know you by any other name. I have called you Claire but I don’t know how to answer that.” I did say, “My hope and prayer for you is that God will convict you over your sins, revealing your unrighteousness to you and God’s Holiness and cause you to cry out, God have mercy on me a sinner. I’m praying that God will grant you repentance and faith in Jesus. I don’t want you to die in your sins and go to Hell.”
First Doctor To Perform Re-Assignment Surgery Now Against Doing Them
So then I asked, “Are you planning on getting surgery done when you can afford it?” Claire’s head nodded up and down in response. I said, “Please don’t do that. Please google it. The doctor that first did re-assignment surgery later came out against it and not for moral or spiritual reasons. Many people who have this surgery later regret it.” (I googled it myself after this encounter and Paul McHugh with John Hopkins Hospital is the Dr. I’m referring to.)
Claire refused a Bible. Next, Claire refused a Gospel tract. So I said, “You asked my opinion when you first walked up to me. I made this tract, so if you really want my opinion, shouldn’t you read it?” Claire reluctantly took it. (I’m grateful for this, but the tract really isn’t my opinion. It is full of Bible verses). We shook hands and Claire walked away. Later on, I received some godly advice from a friend.
Godly Advice From A Friend
I explained that it really didn’t bother me to refer to Claire as a she, because I wanted to continue talking to Claire throughout the school year. My friend directed me to a question and answer session by Pastor Don Green with Truth Community Church. Pastor Green pointed out that if you affirm a transgender in their sin and they later become a Christian, they will realize that what you did was wrong. You were going against your convictions when you were trying to be nice or politically correct.
I can’t go against my convictions. So if later on I talk to Claire again and he insists that I refer to him as she, I can’t do it. I will politely explain why I can’t do so and I will affirm that I’m still praying that God will save Clair, but I can’t affirm him in his rebellion against God. Earlier when I was bringing the message, one student tried to shoulder bump me, but it was so weak, I barely noticed it. I had to laugh and wonder if that little tap was somehow supposed to make me pack up and go back to work. It was great being back on campus after Christmas break and more students took Gospel tracts than refused them on the way to and from the witnessing spot. May God be glorified and may He save Claire and many other students at MSU.
