So what’s the big deal about sin? Everybody does it. We are all just human beings. We all make mistakes. There’s no need to worry about it. We’re not bad people. It’s not like we’ve murdered anyone. There are a whole lot of people that are worse (more evil) than we are. Just live and let live.
We hear all kinds of statements like these when we are out street witnessing. Most people really, truly don’t believe that they are bad. Since they are not rapists and murders – truly “evil” people, they think that God should cut them some slack. They think that God should recognize their “good works” and ignore their sins.
The big deal about sin is that it’s a big deal to God! Sin goes against God’s Holy nature. When we sin, we are putting ourselves in God’s place (think of Satan’s sin as stated in Isaiah 14:12-14). We are trying to be in control. We want to do what we want. We are putting ourselves first, we are living selfishly for ourselves instead of living for God (2 Timothy 3:1-4).
Unbelievers should worry because God cannot tolerate sin. Isaiah 59:2-3 says “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue has muttered preverseness.”
What’s the big deal about sin? Unrepentant people should worry about sin because sin is offensive to God. Not only does sin offend God’s perfect nature, but our sin is actually rebellion against God (Daniel 9:9-10). Have you ever thought of that? When you sin, you are rebelling against our Holy God.
It’s no wonder God’s wrath is against unrepentant sinners (Ephesians 2:3). That’s why the Bible says that it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God (Hebrews 10:31). Unbelievers are actually enemies of God (Colossians 1:21). Worse yet, Revelation 21:8 states that all liars will have their part in the lake of fire.
This is so serious. If you die in your sins as an unrepentant sinner, then the lake of fire is your final destination. Jesus described Hell as a place where the worm does not die and the fire is never quenched (Mark 9:47-48). It is everlasting torment. The pain goes on forever.
The Good News is that you don’t have to go to Hell. You don’t have to be separated from God’s love for eternity. God has made a way to forgive your sins and to cleanse you from your rebellious nature. God sent Jesus to walk this earth 2,000 years ago. Jesus never sinned once. He never broke any of the 10 Commandments and in fact He always did exactly what God the Father wanted Him to do. He never rebelled once! In fact He was obedient to death, even death on the cross (Philippians 2:8).
Jesus was beat beyond recognition and then He hung on the torturous cross for six grueling hours where He died. He was buried and on the third day rose from the grave. Jesus defeated sin and death. He did what we can’t do.
God offers you salvation from your sins if you repent – turn away from your sins and put your trust – surrender your life to Jesus Christ. You need to recognize that you are a sinner and that your sin is rebellion against God. You need to understand that there is nothing you can do to change that. You can’t undo your sins. We can only be saved from the wrath of God and brought back into a right relationship with Him through the shed blood of Jesus (Romans 5:1,9).
There is no time like the present to get right with God. Stop walking after the flesh (selfishly for yourself) and walk after the Spirit (God’s will). Please stop rebelling against our Holy God who gives you every breath you take. Please, turn away from your sins and put your faith in Jesus (Acts 26:20).
