What is the purpose of life? Is it just to wake up in the morning, eat, get dressed, go to work, come home and yell at the kids a little bit, eat supper, watch a little t.v., go to bed and get up the next day and do it all over again? Is this really what life is all about? Is it really just about getting by, getting through, rushing to the end? Is what’s waiting for you at the end just the end?
I think I unknowingly searched for the meaning of life for a lot of years in all the wrong places. I was searching for what made me happy. I was selfish. Did what I wanted. I wanted more of everything. More to drink, more money, more material things, more, more, more, more. And did I mention more?
But guess what all of this more got me? More misery, more pain, more stress and more pressure. The ironic part was that more was never enough. I never reached a point where I said I have made enough money or collected enough things (like rock albums). I had an insatiable appetite. You see, more materialism (your false god) is never enough no matter how much more you get.
The purpose of life is not self-fulfillment (oops, wealth, health and prosperity teachings). The purpose of life is to find God and to have a close personal relationship with Him and to help others find Him too. God wired us to look for him. He made us to where we know that there is something missing. Unfortunately, a lot of people follow the same path I took. They realize something is missing, but they are looking for that something in all the wrong places.
If you are not a Christian, please find God. (You can read My Testimony, Ten Commandments, How to be Saved, all here on this web-site). Please, look for God with a humble and broken heart. We have all sinned against our Holy God and our sin separates us from God. There is nothing you can do on your own to change that. You can’t be good enough or do enough good deeds to make up for the bad things that you have done. Please turn away from your sins and put your trust in Jesus Christ alone. That’s the only thing that can save you. Salvation is a gift from God, not from your own works. The Bible says today is the day of salvation. Please, get right with God today.
If you are already a Christian, I want to recommend a really good book that I read a few years ago by John Eldridge called Waking the Dead. (He’s talking about waking up us spiritually dead Christians).
If you are a Christian I challenge you to answer the following four questions Mr. Eldridge brought up in his book:
1. What am I passionate about?
2. What makes me “come alive”?
3. How am I honoring God?
4. What am I invested in that is bigger than myself?
If you are a Christian, please go to God in prayer and sincerely ask Him these questions. You might be surprised where God leads you. Are you ready to spiritually come alive?
