Was Jesus politically correct? Do you think Jesus took any sensitivity training classes? Did He need to? Is Jesus politically correct today?
To answer these questions, let’s take a look at some of the actions Jesus took as well as some of the things Jesus said to the religious leaders more than 2,000 years ago. Jesus drove out the buyers and sellers at the temple and He overturned the money changer’s tables at the temple (Matt. 21:12). Jesus also called the religious leaders of His day hypocrites and blind guides! (Matt. 23:13-16). Jesus hung out with prostitutes, tax collectors and sinners (Matt. 11:19). (This doesn’t mean Jesus condoned their behavior. In fact the Bible points out in several places that a lot of these sinners changed their ways after encountering Jesus).
So was Jesus politically correct? Absolutely, positively not! Jesus spoke only what the Father wanted Him to speak (John 8:28-29). Jesus spoke the truth, God’s truth and this truth is offensive to some people. Jesus spoke only the truth and He knew that some people would not accept it (John 6:53-58). Jesus asked His disciples if His words offended them (John 6:61). Then it says in John 6:66 that many of his disciples (different than the 12 disciples) quit following Him. God’s truth is an uncompromising truth.
If we are to be Christ followers, true disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, we must speak God’s truth from the Bible out of our love for others. God’s truth will offend some people. Are you willing to tell others whatever God directs you to say even if it is politically incorrect? Even if it comes across as being insensitive (the subject matter, not your tone)? Please keep in mind that we are to speak God’s truth as found in the Bible and we are to do so gently, humbly and patiently (2 Timothy 2:24). But we should share the truth with others without sugar coating it. Jesus was not politically correct and we shouldn’t be either.
