I Was A Christian For Thirteen Years
Ministry Update December 15, 2019
I’m not superstitious. Last Friday was Friday the thirteenth and there was a full moon and the mockers were out in full force. I don’t blame it on superstition, it’s just sinful men and women acting like sinful human beings in a fallen world. Besides one guy saying, “I was a Christian for thirteen years” the other mockers that stood out while I was open-air preaching was a pickup with a couple of guys in it. They both started mocking from the moment they pulled up to the corner. As the driver pulled away, the passenger stuck his head through the sliding glass opening in the rear window and mocked all the way down the street.
The I was a Christian for thirteen years guy was very similar; except he was walking with his friend. The mocker started before he got to the corner, mocked as he crossed the street and continued another half a block. The only thing I really heard clearly was “I was a Christian for thirteen years”. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard an atheist say something like this. But sadly, they are mistaken. I told the young man that he couldn’t have been a Christian for thirteen years and no longer be one. It is not possible. I also told him that it was a shame that he wouldn’t stick around and listen to the message, because that is what it is about. Not only does Jesus seek the lost, He saves them!
Jesus Doesn’t Save For A While Then Get Bored And Let You Go
Those whom Jesus saves don’t just stay saved for a while and then Jesus get’s bored with them (like some people do with a puppy or kitten) and then tosses them to the side. No, whom the Son sets free is free indeed. Jesus came to do the will of His Father and God’s will was that Jesus would lose NONE that came to Him (John 6:39). Hmm, who am I going to believe? Some God-hating, smart aleck or my Lord and Savior? If Jesus says that He loses none, then none that are truly saved will walk away from the Lord.
After bringing the message, I handed out Gospel tracts. Even though Wynonna Judd was going to perform at the Gillioz Theatre in a few minutes, there wasn’t a lot of foot traffic at that time. So I walked to the square and then a couple blocks downtown. There was a group of young people all dressed in Goth clothes standing outside the Outland Ballroom. Surprisingly, many of them took tracts. One guy asked, “What’s this?” I had already moved on and was handing out tracts to other people and then he laughed and said, “Oh, fairy tales.” Several people standing around laughed, but surprisingly, a couple of more people still took tracts after the God-mocking comment.
Why Christianity
Sebastian and I handed out Living Waters – Why Christianity booklets at Missouri State University on Monday. It was finals week and I like to do something different than open-air preaching during finals. It was cold and misting rain the whole time, but we had a great time. Sebastian is very comfortable and natural with students. He asks them about their majors or how finals are going. One student told him that he had eight finals. That’s a load. But the surprising thing was many students told us they were done with finals or only had one more to take.
Most students were very pleasant, even the majority of ones that refused booklets. An older student refused a booklet and then said, “Go sell it somewhere else!” I just said, “Have a good day.” But what I really wanted to say was I’m not selling anything! Salvation is a free gift from God. You can’t earn salvation and you can’t save yourself. One awkward moment was when I was handing out booklets one direction and spun around to hand one out and I looked right at the silent mocker. He just shook his head no and I spun back around and started handing them out to students. The silent mocker and I really don’t interact anymore. One student looked at the booklet in my hand and said, “What is it?” I replied “A Gospel tract.” Then he shrugged his shoulders and took it.
(These updates are provided to encourage Christians to share the Gospel with others. Don’t let fear of rejection keep you from handing out tracts or sharing your testimony. We are only called to share the Gospel. Salvation is of the Lord.)
