It seems like several pastors and Christian singers lately have come out in favor of universalism. They may not even call it that, but if you listen closely to what they say, this is the direction they are going. They basically believe that since God is love, God will not punish people for their sins, He will just forgive everyone no matter what and that everyone will be alright.
The main problem with universalism is that it is unbiblical. Yes, God is love. That statement is true and biblical (1 John 4:8). God’s nature is full of love, grace and mercy. This is also biblical (Psalm 145:8). But universalists misunderstand the whole nature of God. God is equally Holy, righteous and just. These attributes are also very biblical (Isaiah 6:3, Romans 1:17:18). Because God is just, He cannot tolerate sin. Our sin separates us from our Holy God. Because God is righteous and just, He must be fair. To be fair, someone has to pay the penalty for sin.
Sin is rebellion against God. Someone has to pay for that rebellion. The Bible is very clear about this. Jesus spoke about Hell many times in the Gospels and in Revelation and 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 states, “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.”
These verses are just a few of many that prove the existence of Hell. Universalism is wrong and it’s very dangerous. If you believe in universalism, I beg you to read your Bible. Start with the book of John, then go back and read The New Testament – Matthew through Revelation. If you read the Bible, you will clearly see what Jesus taught about Hell, judgment and eternal suffering. Then once you see the truth, obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, repent from your sins and put your complete trust in Jesus; ask Him to save you and put your faith wholly in Him. That is a universal truth you can stake your eternal life on.
