Spotless Lamb
I’m sure even non-Christians have heard of the 10 plagues that God sent upon Egypt during Old Testament times. The water was turned to blood, frogs, lice, flies, pestilence, boils, hail (with fire and thunder), locusts, darkness and the death of the firstborn of man and beast. It was only after the death of the first born that Pharaoh let the Israelites go. But did you know that not a single firstborn child or animal of the Israelites died that night? Why not? Because of the spotless lamb.
Please listen to the following account of the Passover lamb from Exodus 12:1-13: And the Lord spoke unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. Speak unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
Lamb Without Blemish
And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: you shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And you shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the internal organs thereof.
Let Nothing Remain Until Morning
And you shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remains of it until the morning you shall burn with fire. And thus shall you eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s Passover.
For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where you are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
The Israelites Followed The Commands Of The Lord
Again, the Israelites followed the commands of the Lord and all their first born children and first born animals were spared. The Israelites shed the blood of the spotless lamb and then put the blood on the top and the two sides of the door posts on their houses. God told the Israelites that when He saw the blood of the lamb, He would pass over that house. In other words, the house that had the blood of the lamb on the door posts would be spared the plague that was pronounced against the Egyptians.
The Israelites were instructed to find a spotless lamb. They had to inspect the lamb for three days to ensure that there were no blemishes on the lamb. The lamb had to be spotless. That was God’s command. The first step was to find a spotless lamb, which every single Israelite family obeyed. They had to inspect the lamb closely to ensure that it was indeed spotless, without blemish or defect.
It Took The Shedding Of Blood To Save
Then they had to sacrifice the lamb. It took the shedding of blood to save the Israelites and their families. If they had merely tied a lamb to the front door, it would not have spared the firstborn children and the firstborn animals. A live lamb, though spotless, could not save them from the plague. It took the shed blood of the spotless lamb to do that. They found a spotless lamb, then they sacrificed that lamb. Only then were the families spared; saved, from the plague of death against the firstborn children and animals.
I’m not talking about this tonight to get PETA stirred up. We don’t need them coming out here to protest us. There is as purpose for relaying the tenth plague against the Egyptians and the importance of the spotless lamb. You see, the shed blood of the spotless lamb was a precursor to the Lord Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the old rugged cross. It pointed to the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus would make when He came to this earth a little over 2,000 years ago.
The Spotless Lamb Of God
Jesus is the spotless Lamb of God. John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there stands one among you, whom you know not; He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The next day John seeing Jesus coming unto him, and said, Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizes with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he said, Behold the Lamb of God! (John 1:26-36)
We Have All Gone Astray
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he has put him to grief: when you shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
Poured Out His Soul Unto Death
Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he has poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors (Isaiah 53:6-12).
Forasmuch as you know that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God (1 Peter 1:18-21).
Jesus Is The Spotless Lamb Of God
Folks, I’ve quoted a lot of Bible verses tonight because it is important to realize that Jesus is the spotless Lamb of God. Jesus never sinned, not one time. But we have all sinned. All we like sheep have gone astray. We’ve said no to God and yes to our own way. But our way leads to physical death and eternal damnation. Only Jesus saves and He saves because He is the spotless Lamb of God.
Not only was Jesus spotless or sinless, but He also was sacrificial. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus gave His all, His precious, sinless, spotless, life for guilty sinners like you and me. Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission (or forgiveness) of sin (Hebrews 9:22). But you must receive salvation. It is the free gift from God, but you must receive it.
Spotless Sinless Sacrificial And The Only Way Of Salvation
Not only was Jesus spotless (sinless) and sacrificial, but He also is the only way of salvation. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10). The shed blood of Jesus can cleanse you tonight. God’s righteous anger over your sins can pass over you and be placed on Jesus Christ the Lord, if you repent and trust Him. You can be spared, just like the Israelites were spared.
Oh tonight, recognize that you are a sinner and that Jesus is the spotless Lamb of God, that He is the only Savior of mankind. Admit your sins to God. Cry out for Almighty God to save you. Repent from your sins and surrender your life to Jesus Christ. Come to Jesus tonight and be saved.
The Lord Will Not Hold You Guiltless
If Jesus Christ is not your Lord and Savior, then the guilt of your sins remains upon you. The Lord will not hold you guiltless. You will have no excuse on Judgment Day and make no mistake, there is judgment to come. What will you do with your sins on that great and terrible day of the Lord? You will have no where to hide and no one to blame. You will be guilty if you die in your sins.
Don’t continue going through life with the wrath of God abiding upon you. Repent and believe the Gospel. Do this tonight. He that believes on the Son has everlasting life: and he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him (John 3:36).
The shed blood of Jesus can make you whole. You can be protected from the righteous judgment of God. Repent from your sins and put your faith in Jesus Christ the Lord, the spotless Lamb of God. Be saved tonight. Call upon the name of Jesus Christ and be saved. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13).
