I was watching a guy on youtube the other day and he said that he was going to follow Socrates. What in the world was he talking about?
He went on to say that he didn’t believe in God or Jesus, so he was going to believe in Socrates. Socrates was a wise person and he was going to follow him. He said that Socrates never said that you had to believe everything he said or you would end up in Hell. That is true. Socrates never said that. But Socrates wasn’t the Son of God. Socrates was a mere mortal like you and me. Socrates didn’t always speak the truth and only the truth. Socrates sometimes gave us his opinion.
Jesus Christ never gave us His opinion. He only spoke the truth. Jesus is Truth. John 14:6 says, Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me. Jesus is the truth, Socrates is not the truth.
My wife heard what the gentleman was saying on the video and she asked a very good question, “How many people have died for Socrates in the past 2,000 years?” (Hint: Zero) How many people are still dying for Socrates today? (Hint: Zero) How many people have died for their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ over the past 2,000 years? (Many) How many people around the world are dying for their belief in Jesus today? (Many people are still being persecuted and even dying for their belief in Jesus today.)
Towards the end of the video the gentleman said that his intelligence was a gift. My wife (who was on a roll that night) asked, “who gave him the gift of intelligence?” Again, another good question. This gentleman spent 7 or 8 minutes telling us why he didn’t believe in God or Jesus and why he was going to follow Socrates. Do you really think Socrates gave him his intelligence? No, I don’t think so either. His intelligence is indeed a gift, a gift from our Almighty Maker, God Himself!
So who are you going to trust your eternal salvation to, Socrates or Jesus? I don’t know about you, but I am going to put my trust in the truth, the only name under Heaven by which people can be saved by, Jesus Christ. Who are you depending on for your salvation?
