Poetry Reading
Ministry Update June 28, 2020
I’ve seen a lot of strange things while out street witnessing over the past 10 years, but I’ve never seen a poetry reading until last Friday night. That’s right, I witnessed poetry reading on a street corner. This wasn’t from some random person running up to us and reading poetry and it wasn’t just any old poem. No, my friend Kelly read a poem by Hosanna Wong called I Have A New Name. It is a beautiful, powerful poem and Kelly was even choked up as he read it. People could hear the sincerity and love in his voice as he read this wonderful poem about believers having a new name in Christ.
So I ask you dear reader, do you have a new name in Christ Jesus? Are you saved? Have you repented of your sins and surrendered your life fully and completely to Jesus? For those of us who have repented and believe the Gospel are new creatures in Christ. We are no longer the same old dirty, rotten sinners we once were. Are we perfect? By no means. But are no longer the names we used to be. We are washed, we are cleansed by the shed blood of Jesus. For those who are curious about Hosana’s poem, there is a link posted at the end of this update.
Young Man Doesn’t Believe in God
Before Kelly read the poem, I brought a message concerning whether Christians need to repent over racism. (Lord willing, I will post that message in a few days). While bringing the message, one guy slowed down in his vehicle long enough to yell “Hail Satan”. I doubt the guy was really for racism. More than likely, he’s just against the preaching of the Gospel. Later on, while I was still bringing the message, I heard Kelly offer tracts to a couple of guys and not only did both of them refuse the offer, one of them replied “I don’t believe in God.”
This broke my heart and I addressed it while open-air preaching. One day this young man will face his great Creator and not only will he know that he was wrong and God is real, but he will bow and confess to this very God he claims doesn’t exist. But the heartbreaking part is that if he waits until Judgment Day, it will be too late. This young man will suffer the torments of the lake of fire for all eternity. That’s a really long time to ponder your rejection of the great God of Heaven and earth. As I pointed this out to others that were around, I reminded them that even though they may not openly mock God like the young man did, they will suffer the same fate if they foolishly die in their sins. I pleaded with people to repent and trust Jesus.
Handing Out Gospel Tracts
After Kelly read the poem, we walked around downtown handing out tracts. We visited with old friends on the square that were getting ready to witness there. Kelly and I were blessed to hand out a lot of Gospel tracts out that night. One lady took one and she continued in her direction and we were walking the other direction when she yelled “God bless” to us and we turned around and said “God bless you too”. There was a young teenager that took one and I told him that it tells about Jesus. I asked him if he died tonight, would he go to Heaven or Hell and he replied “Probably Hell.”
Then I asked him if that concerned him and he wasn’t sure. So I shared the Gospel with him; how we have all sinned against God and how Jesus is the only Savior who suffered, bled and died on the cross in the place of guilty sinners who repent and trust Him. (Also told him that Jesus rose from the grave). Then I pointed out that the young man needs to repent and trust Jesus. I asked him if he had a Bible and he told me that he has several. I encouraged him to read the Bible. May God save this young man named Joseph.
