Perfect Picture Of Street Witnessing
Conner and I were witnessing downtown Friday night and a guy named Kevin joined us too. Interestingly, Kevin came over and talked to Conner while I was open-air preaching. Kevin thought I talked too much about Hell, but he stayed the rest of the time we were witnessing. After Conner and I brought messages, we handed out Gospel tracts and New Testaments. At one point, a man driving a van was heading the wrong way down the one-way street and there was a car coming toward him. All three of us yelled at the same time “Turn, turn, turn.” We were trying to get the man to turn right onto St. Louis Street (to safety) and avoid the oncoming car. Instead of turning like we pleaded, The guy kept going straight and the woman passenger stuck her head out the window and yelled “Shut the f up!”
Sadly, this is a perfect picture of street witnessing (at least most encounters). We are pleading with people to repent – turn from their sins and turn to Jesus. Instead of heading the warning, more people than not, tell us to shut up or to leave them alone. We are pleading with them to “turn, turn, turn” from their sins and turn to Jesus just like we pleaded with the driver going the wrong way to turn away from danger. But many people do not heed the warning.
Really Was A Perfect Example Of Street Witnessing
But it really was a perfect example of street witnessing. Conner and I both had mockers tell us to shut up while we brought messages. But we also had encouragers too. One guy gave a thumbs up. Another guy said, “Praise the Lord. Keep it up,” My favorite encouragement was while I was saying that even the demons know who Jesus is, I asked a large group of women if they know who Jesus is. Most if not all of them turned around and enthusiastically said they know who Jesus is. It’s hard to say for sure with short encounters, but the women seemed to be real Christians.
Toward the end of the night a couple of skateboarders rode toward us. I held my arm out and offered a New Testament to the first guy. He ignored me so right when he passed me, I loudly said, “Hey!” He stopped and turned around. I said, “This is for you.” He replied, “I’m not religious.” I said, “You’re exactly who needs this!” He laughed and took the New Testament. Then I encouraged him to read the book of John and ask God to show him that God is real. About that time his buddy rode up so I handed him a New Testament too and encouraged him to also read the book of John. They both rode off and Kevin who was still with us said that he liked that encounter. I told him that I could tell that they weren’t going to stick around for a longer conversation, so the best I could hope for was to get God’s word in their hands and encourage them to read it.
Only About One-Third Of The Normal Students
I witnessed at Missouri State University on Wednesday (and I hadn’t been there for about six or seven weeks). I was shocked at the lack of students. After handing New Testaments to a young man and young woman, I asked them where all the students were. They both told me that the majority of students were probably in their dorm rooms taking their classes online. So I said, “You probably feel pretty safe walking around don’t you?” They both agreed that they did feel safe. I only had two mockers and one supporter while open-air preaching. Handed out New Testaments before and after the message and switched to Gospel tracts when I ran out of New Testaments.
