My wife and I recently were traveling East on Highway 54 (in Missouri) and it rained and sleeted on us for nearly two hours. We were about 20 miles from Jefferson City when I hit black ice on a bridge on a corner and lost control of my Honda Pilot. We started sliding toward the bridge but thankfully we were near the end of it and we missed it. We then hit the ditch at probably 65 MPH and we were sliding sideways, then we spun on around and were heading backwards up an embankment.
The whole time we both had the sensation that the Pilot was going to tip over. As we were heading up the embankment, backwards and out of control, I cried out to God, “God help us.” About a second later we were stopped and the back end of the Pilot was back near the shoulder of the highway. We very much count it as a miracle that we survived without a scratch. I also have a new appreciation for Psalm 50:15 “And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
We are thanking and praising God that we made it home safely. I can tell you that the feeling of being out of control wasn’t any fun at all. I felt helpless and we were both very afraid. Later that night I was praising God for rescuing us and the thought occurred to me that when we are Christians, when we are no longer servants to sin; we are servants to Christ. Romans 6:18 states, “Being then made free from sin, you became the servants of righteousness.”
If we are true Christians, living the way we should be living, we are no longer in control of our lives. Jesus is our Lord, our Savior and our high priest. Hebrews 4:14-16 says, “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
Depending on our high priest Jesus Christ is a wonderful place to be. When we fully surrender to the Messiah, we shouldn’t feel helpless because we are in good hands. We shouldn’t be afraid because Jesus is leading us. If you haven’t surrendered your life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, won’t you do so today? Who’s in control of your life?
