Have you ever heard the saying of Samuel Johnson, “An attorney who represents himself has a fool for a client?” In the United States of America, judges recognize that only a foolish person would try to represent himself in court. Most of us don’t know the rules of law and we don’t know the court cases to cite for our defense. That’s why only a fool represents himself – it would be absolutely crazy to do so.
So why is it that when it comes to the biggest court case in our entire lives – ever, that so many people are foolishly representing themselves? I don’t know the answer to that, but I know it’s true. Why? Because the Bible says that it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). It truly is the ultimate statistic…10 out of 10 people die. Over 150,000 people die every day. You cannot cheat death.
Look closely at the second part of Hebrews 9:27 – but after this the judgment. Not only are we all going to die, but we are all going to stand before our Holy God on Judgment Day. Even if you don’t believe in Him, it won’t change the fact that you will still stand before God on Judgment Day.
So how will you do? Most of us think that we are good (in fact the Bible says most men proclaim themselves good in their own eyes – Proverbs 20:6). Will you represent yourself or will you have an advocate on your behalf? If you believe or are trusting in anything other than faith in Jesus Christ and in Him alone, then you have the wrong advocate (Acts 4:12). You will be on the losing side.
How can I make a statement like this? Because Jesus is the only perfect, sinless One. He never sinned in thought, word or deed. He died on the cross for guilty sinners who put their faith in Him and turn away from their sins. He is the only one, true Advocate (1 John 2:1). Jesus was the substitute for true believers (Isaiah 53:4-5).
If you don’t believe in God, then you will be representing yourself on Judgment Day. If you follow Buddah or any of the other cults, those false leaders will not be able to save you on Judgment Day. They are not the Living Sacrifice that shed His own blood on our behalf (Revelation 1:5).
So who will represent you on Judgment Day? Will you have a fool as an advocate or will you have the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6) defending you? Jesus is the only Savior and He is the only One who can righteously represent you on the day of wrath (Romans 2:5). Will you receive this free gift today? Surrender your life fully and completely to Jesus Christ our Lord. Repent from your sins and put your faith in Jesus Christ our Lord.
