One Legged Woman Knocks Over Witnessing Sign
Ministry Update August 27, 2022
Friday night was one of those stranger than fiction nights and it’s hard to know where to even start. There were eleven of us witnessing downtown Friday night and there were several strange events, but one that I’ve never seen before was a one-legged woman walked up and knocked Trevor’s witnessing sign over with one of her crutches. The sign was leaning against a pole. The sign said Repent From Your Sin Turn To Jesus Christ. As the woman crossed the street, I yelled, “What did you do that for?” She said something along with claiming that she’s a Christian. I told her there’s no way that she’s a Christian. No true follower of Jesus would knock over a sign that says turn to Jesus Christ. She just kept mouthing off as she walked away.
While Conner was open air preaching, he had a mocker that said something and kept walking. Then as Trevor was preaching, a very vile mocker stood in front of him saying wicked things. Elly tried to reason with the woman, but the woman just became more belligerent and we were a little worried that she might get physical. But she didn’t and two of the woman’s friends came over too. One of the other women asked Elly if God accepts gays. Elly told her, “God is able to save to the uttermost, that He can take filthy sinners from the bottom of the sewer of sin like He did me, and give you a new heart with new desires that loves Jesus and righteousness.” Elly said the woman appeared to genuinely listen. Praise God for that encounter during the craziness.
God Laughs At Scoffers And Mockers
I started off with a short message from Psalm 2. I was just talking about how God sits in Heaven and laughs at scoffers and mockers when two young women walked by. One of them showed her displeasure of the message by flipping us off, so I started preaching directly to her. The mocker and her friend got into her red car and sat there and listened for a few minutes. I warned her that she’s sowing the wind but that she’s going to reap the whirlwind of God’s wrath if she continues mocking God. There is Judgement Day coming and she will give an account for her actions, words and thoughts. As she drove away, she flipped us off one last time.
There were other walk by and drive by mockers throughout the night, but we also had some encouragers and some encouraging encounters. While I was open air preaching, a car slowed down and several people in the car, including the driver gave a thumbs up and/or waved. We also had an encourger later one. A young man came over to encourage us to continue witnessing even amidst the mocking. He said that he served in Afghanistan and the mocking was nothing compared to that (and he’s so right). The young man also told us that he came to Christ while he was in Afghanistan. Praise God!
Panda Head
Matthew and Michael talked to some homeless people. Matthew brought them some food and got into several conversations. Michael said that he talked to one woman but after a while she basically wanted him to move on. Before he left, he offered her a Paul Washer book if she’d read it and she said that she would. Conner’s daughter handed a Gospel tract out to a guy wearing a Panada Head. The same guy walked by us later on and Trevor asked him if he had a Bible at home and the guy said no. Trevor asked if he’d read one if he gave it to him and he replied that he would, so Trevor gave him a New Testament. Joshua got into a couple of conversations and one of them lasted 45 minutes to an hour. That’s what we hope and pray for before we go out witnessing. We also pray that God will save lost souls from the seeds that were planted Friday night.
Jesus Died
This last week was the first week of classes at MSU. On Wednesday, I brought a short message and handed out tracts before and after the message. While open air preaching about Jesus suffering, dying on the cross and rising from the dead, a young woman walked by and yelled, “Jesus died”. I agreed that he died, but that he rose from the dead. To which she replied, “You can’t do that”. I said, “You can if you are the Creator.” She kept walking but I worked into the message how we can look at a building and know there was a builder and we can look at a car and know there was a manufacturer. How much more so can you look around at the world and know there was a Creator?
Two students listened to the message. One of them came over afterwards while I was handing out tracts. He said that he was here from out of state and that he’s done some open air preaching before. I asked him how he came to faith in Jesus and he said that his uncle took him to church and God convicted him and saved him while going to church. Another student asked for recommendations for a church. A lot of students took tracts, but a few refused them. One kid refused a tract and in very good English said, “I don’t speaka’d English.” It was great being back on campus.
(These updates are provided to encourage Christians to share the Gospel with others. Yes, you may get mocked or made fun of by doing so. But our Lord and Savior suffered unimaginable pain and suffering to save guilty sinners like us. What’s a little mocking in comparison to that?”
