Is That A Bible In Your Hands?
Ministry Update June 15, 2018
Pastor Joshua and I had a great time witnessing Friday night. It was not a circus-like atmosphere like the week before. In fact it was a pretty quiet night. Oh we had several mockers, but nothing major. One guy yelled at Pastor Joshua to shut up and then black smoke billowed out of the guy’s tailpipe as he drove away. A woman walking yelled at him and a couple of drivers yelled at me. But one car pulled up while I was bringing a message and it was a full carload of people. The driver leaned over and yelled, “Is that a Bible in your hands?”
I replied that it is the Bible in my hands and the guy said something encouraging like preach on. I don’t remember exactly what he said, but he was encouraging. That was a nice change from the typical mockers. But overall, it was a quiet night. We both handed out tracts while the other one brought a message. Since it was quiet, we also just talked and we had a great time of fellowship. We discussed how people tend to think of open-air preaching as being back in George Whitefield’s day or Charles Spurgeon’s day, but it is biblical and we believe just as needed today as it was in New Testament days.
Is This For A Church?
While we were chatting, a couple of teenagers stopped at the corner next to us. Pastor Joshua handed the young man a Gospel tract. He looked at it and wanted to know, “Is this for a church?” Pastor Joshua told him that it’s a Gospel tract and that he and I go to different churches. The teenager still acted like he wanted to give it back, but he kept it. He said that he and the young lady with him both go to Crossway Baptist Church. Pastor Joshua told him that I go there too, so I chimed in, “Yes I do and it’s a great church”.
In fact Pastor Eddie Bumpers frequently says just because you belong to the church doesn’t mean you are saved. Salvation is through repentance and faith in Jesus, not works, baptism or church membership. I wish I could give every member of my church a Gospel tract. I’d encourage them to read it, then pass the tract on to someone else.
I’m Not Having An Abortion
Polly and I witnessed at Planned Parenthood on Wednesday during the lunch hour. We had a few drive by mockers and at least one drive by encourager. But most of the people coming and going to Planned Parenthood didn’t respond at all. A couple of women walked in together, so I said if you are considering an abortion, please don’t do it. Go to the Pregnancy Care Center on Primrose and get help. One woman yelled back “I’m not having an abortion.”
I don’t know why they went to Planned Parenthood, so I went back to the message because the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation. The glorious Gospel can convict and convert lost souls. Later on a woman walked around from the back of the building, took a picture of us and walked in front of us, back around the building. So we don’t know if she was with Planned Parenthood or from the apartments behind the building. It was just kind of strange. But other people at the shopping center and the restaurant near Planned Parenthood also heard the Gospel. May God be glorified.
