Is Money Evil?
How many times have you heard someone say, “money is the root of all evil?” Is this really true? Is money really the root of all evil? What do you think, is money evil?
“For the love of money is the root of all evil” (I Timothy 6:10a). Money in and of itself is not evil. Money is used to exchange goods or services. It is a way to value goods and services. So money is not evil.
But look at I Timothy 6:10b, “which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” So money is not bad; it is not evil. But the love of money is bad. The love of money is the root of all evil. The love of money is the essential part of evil. It’s the love of money that causes people to be covetousness, greedy and selfish. Yes, it’s also interesting that Paul says that the love of money has even caused some believers to stray or wander from their faith. This is a very serious charge.
Paul goes on to exhort Christians in I Timothy 6:11, “But you, O man of God, flee from these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.”
So use money to pay your bills, take care of your basic needs and take care of your family. But don’t let it become your false god. There is only one God, the one true God. In Isaiah 45:5 God says, “I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me.” Love God, not money.
