How Do You Know The Christian God Is The Right One?
Ministry Update April 8, 2018
On Wednesday I witnessed at Missouri State University. Had a mocker or two and then Quinn the atheist buzzed by me. I told him that I’m talking to Christians this week about sharing the Gospel. But I invited him to come back next week and I would challenge his worldview. A few minutes later he came back and started reading Green Eggs and Ham out loud. It’s been several weeks since he’s come out to play.
After he finished up and started to leave, I reminded him to come back next Wednesday because I was going to challenge his worldview. I don’t know if he will show up or not, but I hope he does. I continued with my message and before I finished up, Brittany was standing there listening and Cooper was there too. Cooper actually showed up first, but they both listened to the end of the message. I was pleading with students to repent from their sins and surrender their lives to Jesus.
Do You Have A Question?
When I finished with the message, Brittany came over to talk to me. I thanked her for loaning me The Reason For God book by Tim Keller and told her that I hope to finish it this month and give it back to her. As we were talking, Cooper started walking away so I said, “Did you have a question young man?” He came over and asked to talk some more about what I was saying at the end. After I did so, he asked me, “How do you know the Christian God is the right one?”
I tried to explain to him that the Christian God as he describes Him has revealed Himself to us through the Bible and that Jesus Christ is the only way for sinful human beings to be made right with the righteous God. Then I offered him a New Testament and he refused. So then I offered him a tract and he accepted it. The tract I gave him was Are You A Good Person? We talked for a while and I was still explaining how we are sinners and God is Holy.
I asked Cooper if he believes that there is a Creator and he said that he does. I also asked him if he believes in God and again he does. So I asked him if he’s a sinner and he admitted that he is. I went through being a liar, thief, adulterer at heart and a covetous person. He admitted that he is these things. Then I explained that all unrepentant sinners deserve eternal punishment for their sins and that’s why Jesus, the sinless Son of God took the punishment that we deserve when He suffered, bled and died on the cross and rose from the grave. That we have to repent from our sins and put our faith in Him.
Different Definitions For Sin
Cooper then told me that we probably have different definitions for sin. He didn’t come right out and say it, but I think he compares himself to other people. But that’s not God’s standard. I said we are not mass murders so compared to others, you may not think that you are not a bad person. Basically, it boils down to Cooper thinking he’s generally a good person. I laughed and said you really need to read that tract I gave you; that’s exactly what it’s about. Again, he wanted to know how the God we believe in is the right God. Then Brittany jumped in and told Cooper how the one true God has revealed Himself to her.
After that Cooper told us that his god has revealed himself to him. I asked how, and he said he could tell us stories, but we’d probably just say they are stories. So I told Cooper that Satan pretends to be an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). That I didn’t doubt that his god has revealed himself, but how does he know that his god isn’t just Satan pretending to be God? He didn’t know how to answer that.
Jesus Is Truth
I told Cooper that Jesus is truth (John 1:14) and that he started off asking us how we know the Christian God is the right one. If he really wants to know this, I challenged him to read the book of John and keep reading it, asking God to reveal Himself to Cooper. I told him that if he humbly does this and keeps reading it over and over and keeps asking God to reveal Himself, that I firmly believe God will do so. Cooper said he’s basically too busy with school to do this. I suggested that he do so after this school year is over. Sadly, Cooper seems all right with the god that he believes in. The Christian God reveals Himself to us through the Bible. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17).
The one true God isn’t about what I think or feel or wish. We don’t have to guess about God, we can know Him through His word and Jesus is the Word (John 1:1). Jesus is the only Savior (Acts 4:12). Since Cooper has made up his own god, I told him that he’s breaking the 2nd Commandment. Actually, he’s breaking the 1st Commandment too, but I didn’t think to say that at the time. I hope and pray that God will convict Cooper to read the book of John and that he will do so, humbly and truly searching for the one true God – the Christian God as Cooper calls God.
Cold Windy Art Walk
I witnessed downtown Friday night. The temperature was in the high 30’s with a 22 mile per hour wind. It felt cold and there weren’t a lot of people around. I handed out 15 to 20 tracts. Talked to Jim the atheist that I haven’t seen for a while. Even though he doesn’t believe in Jesus, he believes in our right of free speech. I appreciate that about Jim. I also had the privilege of talking to three guys from Calvary Chapel that were out handing out water, handing out tracts and witnessing to people. Praise God for those guys out witnessing.
