How Can God Know Evil Since He Is Perfect?
Ministry Update November 15, 2020
Toward the end of my message at MSU on Wednesday, a young man sat on a bench near me. I was explaining how most people think they are good, even though the Bible says none of us are good. The young man yelled what if he admits that he’s evil? Since he stated this nonchalantly, while eating a banana, I told him that it appeared that it would be false modesty in his case. I’ve been street witnessing for 10 years and I’ve seen a few people broken over their sins, but this young man wasn’t one of them. But it started our conversation and the young man went from emphatically saying God isn’t real to asking the question, “How can God know evil since He’s perfect?”
I asked the young man his first name and he hesitated. I really think he was going to make up a name. But instead, he just said he’d rather be anonymous. Anonymous commented after saying that he’s evil, that he doesn’t believe in God. I explained that his not believing, doesn’t change the reality that God does exist. Then he admitted that people are evil and wanted to know how God could allow that. I pointed out that he went from saying God isn’t real to asking how God could allow evil. He then quickly stated, per the Christian faith.
People Being Evil And God Being Perfect Will Preach
As he talked about people being evil and God being perfect, I laughed and told him “that will preach.” But he still wanted to know how God could know evil since He’s perfect. I said if a student walks over and knocks you in the head and steals your wallet, you know that’s wrong and he agreed. So you don’t have to be a thief to know that stealing is wrong. Even though he smirked when I talked about abortion, I used the example anyway. I’ve never forced a woman to have an abortion, but I still know killing a baby in the womb is wrong. He of course is pro-choice, but I think he still understood the example. I pointed out that when he says there is no God, he’s just suppressing the truth in unrighteousness because he doesn’t want to be accountable to an all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present God.
I asked him if he would read a tract if I gave him one and he told me that I had given him one earlier while I was walking around the campus. So I encouraged him to read it and also to read the Bible. He said he had a Bible and has read it before. I asked him to keep reading the Bible and see if what I’m telling him is the truth. When I first got to campus, around 10 students took tracts and only one said no. More rejections came later, but it was a fun way to start witnessing. One of the first ones to take one was a young woman who looked at the tract and I could tell that she wanted to say no, but instead, she kind of went oh well and took it anyway. May God bless the tracts, the message and the encounter with Anonymous. May God save him and many other students.
Triple Proof
The message Friday night was about how the Gospel is foolishness to those who are perishing and how it is the power of God to those of us who are saved. The message was proven true by three different proofs. The first proof is the Bible itself. God’s word is true and cannot be broken (Psalm 12:6). Secondly the message was proven true before it was even spoken! That’s right, the message was proven true just from merely handing out Gospel tracts. The first guy that walked by looked down at the tract and said, “I don’t want that man!” Shortly thereafter a young man took a tract, turned it over as he kept walking and read where it says Seek and Save the Lost. He turned around and said, “Praise God!”
The third proof was while I was actually open-air preaching. A woman walking her dog raised her hand in the air when I was lifting up the precious name of Jesus. Later she walked over and said “Amen”. Another encourager was a man who drove out of the parking lot across the street. He rolled his window down and encouraged me to keep preaching. Then the other side of the third proof was a guy driving by and he yelled “Shut the h___ up!” I love street witnessing. First of all because I’m so grateful that God saved a wretched sinner such as myself and I want to see other people saved too. Secondly, I love witnessing because every time out is unique and you never know what’s going to happen. Thirdly, I love street witnessing because you see God’s word proven true, right before your very eyes.
Yes, I know the Bible is true just from reading it but it’s also wonderful how God proves it through interacting with others. Keven handed out tracts with me while he was waiting for the group of people he witnesses with downtown and we discussed how God shows us the truth of the Bible while we witness. May God be glorified by the lifting up of Jesus Christ our Lord out on the streets. The glorious Gospel is a savor of life unto life for those of us being saved and it is a savor of death unto death for those who are perishing (2 Corinthians 2:15-16). God is glorified either way. Oh we prefer to see people come to Christ, but God receives the glory either way.
