Hell: Real or a Myth? Your answer to this question will probably depend on whether you believe the Bible or not. If you believe the Bible, then you know it is a real place. If you don’t believe the Bible, then you may have convinced yourself that Hell isn’t real. Is it a real place or just a myth?
Let’s look at the inspired Word of God and see what it says about the subject. Matthew 13:41-42 says, “The Son of man (Jesus) shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity (sin or lawlessness); And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 25:41 states, “Then shall he (Jesus) say also to them on the left hand, Depart from me you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” Mark 9:43-44 says, “And if your hand offends you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched.” Revelation 20:15 tells us that “whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”
Jesus spoke about Hell … a lot and He spoke about it in very graphic and grim details. He spoke about fire and not just fire but a fire that never ends. Hell is a real, terrifying place of torment that will last forever. Jesus also talked about who is destined for Hell, those who do iniquity. What is iniquity? It is sin. In Romans 7:7b the apostle Paul says, “I had not known sin, but by the law.” The law, God’s Law, the 10 Commandments help us understand that we are sinful.
None of us have kept the 10 Commandments. We have all lied, most of us have stolen something, most of us have lusted after someone (thereby committing adultery of the heart) and we have all coveted something or someone at one time or another. We haven’t always put God first in our lives. These are only a few of the 10 Commandments and you can see that we are all guilty of breaking the commandments. The Bible says that on Judgment Day God is going to find people who broke His Law guilty and the punishment for that guilt will be eternity in Hell.
If your conscience is bothering you right now then there is Good News! God knows that we are all sinners and He knows that none of us can keep all of the 10 Commandments. So God sent Jesus to earth, He was born of a virgin and He lived His life without sinning. He didn’t do anything wrong, He didn’t say anything wrong and He didn’t have any impure thoughts. Jesus suffered and died on the cross for our sins. On the third day He rose again – defeating sin, Hell and death.
Just knowing this doesn’t save you. Believing this is true doesn’t save you. In order to be saved, you have to put your faith in Jesus. You have to turn away from your sins and put your trust in Jesus. Surrender your life completely to Him. Then your name will be written in the book of life.
Hell is not a myth … it is real and you don’t want to end up there. Repent and put your faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus can save you, He can rescue you from the flames of Hell. Won’t you ask Him to lead your life today?
