Paul’s defines what he means and what constitutes believing in vain as the chapter continues. Some believed but then came to say there was no resurrection. And here is the issue. The gospel that saves is the gospel that was received and preached by the apostles. It can’t be diced up and retain it’s saving power. We don’t get to pick and choose. Oh, I like Jesus, but I can’t believe he was dead and then was raised to life. Oh, I like that He loves me but I can’t believe he saved me from a place of eternal destruction. It’s a false gospel if it’s not the whole gospel. A faith in a false gospel makes is futile and those who hold to a false gospel are still in their sins.
