A lot of people say that they are glad that evangelism “isn’t their spiritual gift” (I know, because I used to be one of them). Other people say that God doesn’t prompt them to witness.
The Bible is very clear on this subject for Christians. Let’s look at at Matthew 28:18-20, “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Go therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even to the end of the world. Amen.” Mark 16:15 says “And he said to them, Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”
If you are Christian, you are supposed to share your faith. These verses do not mean that every Christian is going to become a missionary. What it does mean is that wherever you go, you are to share the Gospel. Every Christian can share their faith. We don’t need a sign from God to open our mouth and share the Gospel. Now don’t get me wrong, if the Holy Spirit is convicting you to speak to a specific person at a specific time, by all means, do it! But if you don’t have a specific message from God, you are still commanded to share your faith.
You may be thinking right now that you don’t know how to share your faith with others. No sweat. I’ll share with you the easiest form of witnessing in the whole world – your own testimony. That’s right, the easiest, most natural form of evangelism is just to simply tell others how you came to Christ. This is something you need to think about. Write it down. Try to get it down to 3 to 5 minutes. Then after you are comfortable with it, practice it. Share it with another Christian and ask them to critique it for you.
Then look for opportunities to share your faith with family members, friends, co-workers, even strangers. Just start out talking to them about something natural like the weather. Bring up the weather and then ask them if they knew that the hydrological cycle is mentioned in the Bible (a lot of people don’t realize this, check out Ecclesiastes 1:7 and Job 36:27-29). From there you can casually work into the conversation, “Did you grow up with a Christian background?” Listen to what they tell you, what they believe and then share with them your path to salvation.
Or you can bring up baseball. You can ask them about the St. Louis Cardinals. ask them if they think Tony Larussa is a good manager. Listen to what they tell you. You can comment on the subject too, but then tell them you have a great manager for your life. a leader that never steers you wrong. Then tell them how Jesus is your Lord and Savior and tell them your testimony.
You will find that most people will allow you to tell them what you believe AFTER you ask them what they believe. You can do this. Pray that God gives you His strength and His courage to share your faith with others. If by chance you catch a person that is adamant about not talking to you about “God stuff,” don’t worry about it. Pray for that person and move on. There are over 6 billion people in the world and I am confident you can find someone else to witness to.
For an example of a testimony, go to My Testimony. For evangelism training, go to Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron’s website, Way of the Master. Then go. Go and share your faith with the lost and don’t worry about the results. God commanded us to share our faith. He is the One who draws people to Himself.
