Don’t Touch Me
“Don’t touch me!” the drunk screamed at me Friday night. The ironic part was that he mumbled that he should knock me off the box right before he got to me and then he did try to knock me off. As I was falling backwards I put my forearm out to keep him from hitting me. The drunk then went ballistic. First cussing me out and then he got right in Aaron’s face, yelling and cussing him out. Then Justin tried to talk to the guy, but he just yelled and cussed him out too.
If that wasn’t enough excitement for one night, a woman driving down the street, pulled over across the street, walked up to me and asked me why I was yelling. I tried to answer her, but she stopped me. So I told her that she asked me a question and wouldn’t let me answer, so she really didn’t want to have a discussion. So I started preaching again. She mouthed off for a little bit and moved on.
Then Aaron brought a message telling people that there are no parties in Hell. An encourager came up and shook his hand while he was preaching. A few others mocked as they drove by and some drivers revved their engines. But one guy walked by making a horrible demonic noise. It was quite strange.
Justin, Aaron, Diana, Elise and I ended the night singing hymns (well actually Elise didn’t sing, but she was down there supporting us). We finished singing I’ll Fly Away and a guy stood in front of us, just staring at us. So Aaron held up the song sheet with words on it, then the guy started singing with us.
As we walked to our vehicles at the end of the night, three people were walking toward us. Evidently they recognized us as the guys who preach downtown because one drunk started yelling that he needed to hear about Jesus. They walked over to us, so we both handed all three of them tracts. The young girl professed to be a Christian and she had what she called a “Jesus necklace.” She said that she’d had a rough day and wanted to know if God would forgive her for getting drunk. Aaron and I encouraged her and her friends to read the tracts after they sobered up. May God grant them repentance and faith in Jesus as well as the those who heard the Gospel that night.
Two Encouragers and Two Mockers
The students were back at MSU from Christmas break. I know they call it Winter Break, but it still coincides with the old Christmas break and we know why they still take off during that time of year. I had a couple of mockers and a couple of encouragers. One of the mockers walked by and yelled “shut up.” I replied “God bless you.” He didn’t know what to say, so he walked on. One guy walked up and shook my hand and another guy gave me thumbs up as he walked by.
My favorite atheist came and gave me a hug. I asked her if she’s still engaged and she said that she is. She also shared with me that she has a few less class hours this semester so I think she’s excited about that. This is the student that originally said some really awful things the first time we met. But since then, she offered me part of her lunch one day last semester and we’ve had very cordial conversations since then. Oh, may our most gracious God save her, the other students that heard the glorious Gospel.
