Can A Prophet Lie?
Can a prophet lie? In today’s world of tolerance, can a prophet lie and we just forgive that prophet because we all make mistakes? Do we forgive and forget? I’m asking these questions because I’ve had many unbelievers tell me that they think Jesus was just a good person who said some good things to live by, but they don’t believe in the supernatural things that He did. If this is your belief tonight, then you are calling Jesus a liar. So I ask again, can a prophet lie?
One night while witnessing here downtown we talked to three young Muslims. One of them was telling us that he loves Jesus more than we do because he fasts for Jesus once a year. The young man asked if we fast for Jesus and we admitted that we don’t. So he concluded that he loves Jesus more because he fasts every year for Jesus. But just like Allah is not the one true God of the Bible, the Muslim’s version of Jesus is not the real Jesus. He is not the Jesus of the Bible.
The Muslims said they believe that Jesus was a prophet. Well, again, can a prophet lie? Allah has no son, but Jesus is the Son of God. He said that He and His Father are one (John 10:30). So if they think Jesus was a prophet who again did good things and said good things (they even believe that He did miracles), but don’t believe that He is the Son of God, then they are calling Jesus a liar. Can a prophet lie and truly be a prophet from God?
Prophet, Priest And King
Jesus was a Prophet, Priest and King. Moses, through the power of the Holy Spirit, said that God would raise up another prophet like himself. The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken (Deuteronomy 18:15). The Lord is our High Priest (Hebrews 4:14). Jesus is the King of kings and the Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16).
Not only this, but Jesus says that He is the great I AM. Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that you have a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and you say, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
Are you greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: who do you make yourself out to be? Jesus answered, If I honor myself, my honor is nothing: it is my Father that honors me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
Yet you have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM (John 8:52-58).
Jesus Is The Prophet That Moses Spoke Of
Jesus is the prophet that Moses spoke of. The Lord said that before Abraham was, I am. This is a reference to when Moses spoke to God in the burning bush. And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shall you say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you (Exodus 3:13-14).
The Lord Jesus said before Abraham was, I AM. Jesus says that He is God. He is the great I AM. Jesus is Immanuel, God with us. He was God in the flesh and yes, He eternally existed before He was born of the virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit. Jesus is God the Son. So, tonight, if you are an unbeliever who just thinks Jesus was a good man or if you are a Muslim (or follower of any of the other cults) and believe that Jesus was a prophet, how can He merely be just a man or just a prophet if He is God the Son? How can He be a prophet if He lied? Can a prophet lie?
A Prophet From God Cannot Lie
If a prophet is from God, that prophet cannot lie. God says that’s one sure way to tell a real prophet from a false one. If a prophet tells you something that goes against Scripture, then that prophet is a false prophet, he is a liar. Or if a prophet says something that turns out to be false, that prophet was not sent by God.
If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and gives you a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spoke unto you, saying, Let us go after other gods, which you have not known, and let us serve them;
You shall not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proves you, to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and you shall serve him, and cleave unto him. And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death (Deuteronomy 13:1-5).
When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: you shall not be afraid of him (Deuteronomy 18:22). If a prophet says something and it doesn’t happen, then that prophet was not from God. That prophet is a liar.
Can’t Have It Both Ways
Folks, we’re here to tell you tonight that you can’t have it both ways. You can’t say that Jesus was just a good man or a prophet and deny His deity, that He is God the Son. If He really wasn’t God in the flesh, if He really isn’t God the Son of the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit), then He isn’t who He said He is. That would make Him a liar and not from God. So again I ask, are you calling Jesus a liar tonight?
Can a prophet lie? No, not if he’s truly a prophet from God. Jesus is either who He says He is or His is a liar. You can’t halfway believe Him. You can’t just believe that He was a good man or a prophet. If he really was a liar, then that automatically disqualifies Him from being good and surely disqualifies Him from being God.
But Jesus is not a liar. Let God be true and every man a liar (Romans 3:4). Jesus is the promised Messiah. He is the promised Savior that was to come. Yes, He gave us great things to live by: love God with all your heart, soul and mind and love others as you love yourself (Mark 12:30-31). He succinctly summed up the 10 Commandments in these two commandments. Also, Jesus performed many miracles that proved that He was who He said He was.
Only Savior Of Mankind
Jesus is the only Savior of mankind. If you merely think that He was a good man or a good prophet, you are missing the real Jesus, the true Jesus, the Jesus of the Bible. Not only are you missing who He really was, you are missing who He truly is and you will miss Him for all eternity if you die in your sins. Don’t foolishly die thinking that Jesus was just a good man or a good prophet. Believe on the Lord Jesus and be saved. Trust in the real Jesus for your salvation.
The Lord Jesus came to this earth 2,000 years ago. He was born of the virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit. Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life. He never sinned, not one time. Yet, He laid down his life as a ransom for many. Even though Jesus was sinless, He took the place of guilty sinners when He went to the cross. God poured His righteous anger over sin out upon His own precious Son. Jesus died on the cross, was buried and rose victoriously from the grave three days later. The Lord defeated sin, death, Hell and Satan.
Eternal Life
God offers eternal life to each and every person who repents and surrenders their life to Jesus. Do this tonight. Don’t continue racing down the broad road to destruction. Enter in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in there at: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads unto life, and few there be that find it (Matthew 7:13-14)
The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). If Jesus is not your Lord and Savior, then all you are working for in this life is death. Physical death and the eternal, never-ending second death. Don’t reject such a great of salvation. Jesus said that all liars will have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death (Revelation 21:8).
Yes, Jesus was the Prophet that Moses predicted would come. But Jesus is more than a prophet. He is more than just a good man. He was the God-man, the only mediator between God the Father and human beings. Jesus was a prophet, priest and king. The Lord is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Come to Jesus tonight. Repent from your sins and put your trust in Jesus Christ the Lord.
Can A Prophet Lie? You Bet They Can!
Can a prophet lie? You bet they can! But understand this, no prophet that lies is from God. Satan is a liar and the father of lies. Lying prophets are Satan’s tools. All false religions were started by false prophets. Don’t get sucked into a false religion. All religions are not the same. The world religions are humans trying to earn favor with God; people deceived by cults are trying to work their way to Heaven.
But Christianity is unique. Christianity is God reaching down to man, making a way for us to escape eternal damnation through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ the Lord. Come to Jesus tonight. Don’t follow any of the lying prophets. Come to the one Prophet, Priest and King. Come to Jesus Christ alone and come to Him through repentance and faith. Repent from your sins and trust in Christ alone for your salvation.
