In Luke 20:17-18, Jesus is talking about the religious leaders at that time. The verses state, And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
Even though Jesus was speaking to the religious leaders, I believe His words apply to all of us. If God has convicted you of your sins, if He has brought you to the point where you know that you have broken His commandments, then you realize that there is nothing you can do to save yourself. You then fall broken on the stone or Rock – on Jesus Christ. You fall at the feet of the Master and cry out to Him for mercy.
If you never fall on the rock of Jesus Christ broken, then this same rock will crush you on Judgment Day (John 12:48). John 3:36 says, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Jesus said you are either for me or against me (Luke 11:23). He was very exclusive. Jesus said that He was the only way of salvation (John 14:6). There is no other way. You either receive the free gift of salvation from God (Ephesians 2:8-9) or you will be separated from God for all of eternity (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). There is no middle ground. You are either a believer or an unbeliever. You are either saved or unsaved. Jesus has taken your sins upon Himself and exchanged them for His righteousness, or you are still living in your sins and you will be held accountable on Judgment Day (Matthew 12:36).
It is so much better to be broken than to be crushed. No one likes to feel bad about themselves. No one really wants to dwell on their past mistakes and re-hash old wounds. But can’t you see that you would be better off to be heartbroken over your sinfulness and confess to God that you have rebelled against Him and that you realize that you can’t undo your sins? You can’t gloss them over or hide them. Only the shed blood of Jesus Christ can make you clean. Surrender your life to Jesus and receive forgiveness for your sins. My prayer is that you will be broken over your sins and that you will cry out to God for mercy (Luke 18:13).
The Bible states, For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13). The Bible also tells us that we are to have repentance toward God and faith toward Jesus Christ our Lord (Acts 20:20-21). You must turn away from your sins and put your trust in Jesus. Come to Jesus broken, and He will heal you. Jesus will take away your sins and give you His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21).
But woe to you if you reject Jesus Christ as Lord. You will defend yourself on Judgment Day and you will have no excuse. You will be found guilty and since God is a good judge, He will sentence you to Hell for all of eternity. Jesus described Hell as a place where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. He said that it is a place where the worm dies not and the fire is never quenched. People who die in their sins and go to Hell, will be crushed by the righteous judgment of God forever. Chose being broken over being crushed. If you are unsaved, may God almighty grant you repentance and faith in Jesus Christ before that great and terrible day.
