If you claim that you are a Christian, how do you know that you really are one? How do you know that you are really saved? You know because you believe and worship. You truly know that you are saved if you believe on Jesus Christ our Lord and you worship Him.
To believe in and worship Jesus is one biblical way to see if you are truly saved. It is biblical because it is what happened to the blind man in the book of John in chapter 9. Please listen to these words from the Holy Bible: And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth (John 9:1).
When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, 7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. 8 The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? (John 9:6-8)
9 Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. 10 Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? 11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight (John 9:9-11).
Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not. 13 They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. 14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. 15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. 16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them (John 9:12-16).
They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet. 18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. 19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? 20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: 21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. 22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him (John 9:17-23).
24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. 25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. 26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? 27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples? 28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples. 29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is (John 9:24-29).
30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvelous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. 31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. 32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. 33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. 34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out( John 9:30-34).
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? 36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? 37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. 38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him. 39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
Man, I love this story! So did John Newton. Mr. Newton penned those famous lyrics for the hymn Amazing Grace from Ephesians 2:8 and John 9:25.
Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.
When Jesus opened the blind man’s eyes, the former blind man known as Bartimaeus, believed on the Lord Jesus. He called Jesus Lord in verse 36. When you are truly saved, you recognize that you are a great sinner in need of a great Savior. You cry out to the Lord Jesus to save you. You beg Him to have mercy on your soul. You humble yourself before the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Then when you are saved, you say along with John Newton: Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! You understand that your sins were wretched to our Holy God.
But believing on the Lord Jesus is more than just believing who He is. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble (James 2:19). The devils or what we would call demons also believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Luke 4:41 states: And devils (or demons) also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them allowed them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
So believing on the Lord Jesus is more than just intellectually knowing or believing that He is the Son of God, that He is the Christ. Demons know that Jesus is the Son of God and they know that He is the Christ, the Messiah, but they do not believe on Him. They do not trust or count on Him for salvation. Unfortunately, there are many people in the world, especially right here in America that believe that Jesus is the Son of God, but they do not have believing faith in Him; they have not believed on Jesus for their eternal salvation. Many people are still counting on their own good works to save them. But works will not save a single soul.
Bartimaeus believed on the Lord Jesus. He knew that Jesus was Lord. He received Jesus as Lord – as Lord of his life. He submitted to the Lordship of Jesus. The blind man not only received physical sight, but he also received spiritual sight.
We are all born with a sinful nature and we have all sinned. We were born spiritually dead. We are spiritually blind from birth. Only Jesus can open the eyes of the blind. Are you still spiritually blind tonight? Or has the Lord Jesus opened your blind eyes? Are you still stumbling around in darkness or have you seen a great Light? Have you come to the Light? Jesus is the Light of the world. Have you surrendered your life to the Light of the world? Are you saved?
Have you believed on the Lord Jesus? Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life (John 5:24). Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life (John 6:47). And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house (Acts 16:31). He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him (John 3:36)
Do you believe on Jesus tonight? Are you putting your trust on His amazing sacrifice on the cross to save you? Have you believed on Him for your salvation? Have you counted on Him for your salvation? Have you been born-again? Are you spiritually alive in Christ Jesus tonight? Have your spiritually blind eyes been opened by our Lord? He is the only One who can do it. He is the only One who can open your spiritually blind eyes?
Are you saved tonight? One of the best proofs that you are saved is that you worship Jesus Christ our Lord. When your spiritually blind eyes have been opened by the Son of the living God, you are so grateful that you must worship the risen Savior. You want to worship Him. You want to praise and thank Him!
The very first thing the blind man did after he understood that Jesus is the Christ was to worship Him. Do you worship Jesus tonight? Will your actions tonight prove what you are saying? You can’t claim Jesus as Lord while you serve Satan. Who are you serving tonight?
What are you seeking tonight? If you are truly saved, you not only believe on the Lord Jesus, but you worship Him. Are you worshiping Jesus tonight? If not, get right with God. Turn away from your sins and turn to Jesus. Don’t put this off. Do this tonight! Believe and worship the risen Savior. Believe and worship the only One who can open your spiritually blind eyes. Believe and worship the One who is worthy of our praise. Believe and worship Jesus.
