I have to admit that I enjoy eating food. My waist line proves it. I need to lose a few pounds (and hopefully I can do that starting the new year). I love meat and potatoes and I seem to never fill up on deserts.
But there is something more important than our physical needs and that is our spiritual needs. To take care of our spiritual needs we have to feed on the Bible. In Matt. 4:4 Jesus said “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”
Christians, do you do this? Do you read the Bible everyday? I’m not being legalistic here. In fact, I’m not even suggesting that you read a certain number of chapters every day. I’m merely asking do you read your Bible every day? Even if it is just one verse and you meditate on it all day long. How often do you feed on God’s word?
This may not seem like a very important question to you, but I think it is very important in discipleship. God sought you out and saved you. He rescued you from everlasting damnation. Jesus paid the supreme price for you. So do you take time out of your day, every day to feast on the word of God? Are you hungry for more of the Lord? Do you want to know Him better? Are you drawing closer to Almighty God?
The Bible says that the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16). In addition to this, God’s word is powerful; it is living and breathing. God communicates to us through the Bible. God reveals areas in our lives that we need to change, improve on and things in our lives that we need to get rid of.
God is the One who transforms us and He does that through His knowledge and His will which we learn about from reading the Bible. “And be not conformed to this world; but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2).
Reading the Bible draws us ever closer to God. God is continually sanctifying true believers. Brothers and sisters in Christ, reading the Bible is a very important spiritual discipline. Let God continue to work on your heart. Allow God to make you and mold you into the person that He wants you to be. Through reading the Bible we learn about fully surrendering our lives to our Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 9:23). Have you read your Bible today? Will you commit to reading it every day? Even if it’s only one verse, read the Bible every day and see how God continues drawing you ever closer to Himself.
