Even though my youngest daughter is a teenager, she is still afraid of the dark. I keep telling her that God is with us in the night time just like He is during the day. But she is still terrified of the dark. Personally, I’m afraid of heights. People are afraid of all sorts of things such as spiders, snakes or mice. Others are afraid of losing their job, their home or losing a loved one.
If you really think about it, we have a lot of things to potentially be afraid of. But let me ask you this: Are you afraid of God? Hebrews 10:31 says that it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. If you are an unbeliever, if you are not a follower of Jesus Christ, I seriously want to ask you if you are afraid of God? Are you afraid of facing Him on Judgment Day? (Hebrews 9:27).
If you are not afraid of God as an unbeliever, then you should be! The Bible says some very specific things and they are very, very unpleasant words. If you really understood the predicament that you are in, you would literally be shaking in your boots. You would literally be scared half to death. You would cry out to God immediately for Him to save you.
But that’s the problem, unsaved people typically have no fear of God. They have a misplaced trust in themselves that they are basically good. Most unbelievers think that since they are good by man’s standard and because God is merciful (and that’s even if they believe that much) that He will forgive them of their sins and “give them a free pass.”
Folks, nowhere in the Bible does it state such a thing. The Bible doesn’t say that being good will save you from the wrath of God. Nowhere does it say that doing good will overcome the bad you have done in your life. Nowhere does it say that unbelievers will be alright in the end because of their ignorance or unbelief. The Bible says that you can look around at creation and know that God is real (Romans 1:20).
Romans 1:18 says that the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. Romans 2:5 mentions the wrath of God and His righteous judgment. John 3:36 says that those who do not believe in the Son of God have the wrath of God abiding against them! Revelation 20:15 states that if your name is not written in the book of life that you will be thrown into the lake of fire.
Romans 5:8 tells us that God loved us while we were yet sinners and that Christ died for us. The apostle Paul says that believers are justified by the blood of Christ and believers are saved from the wrath of the God. Ephesians 5:5-6 states For this you know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolator, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things comes the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
Do not be deceived. God is angry at unrepentant sinners because of their sins. You cannot get back in right relationship with God on your own. We have all fallen short of the perfect glory of God (Romans 3:23). It takes perfection to reach God and none of us are perfect. Only Jesus Christ who was fully God and fully man walked this earth and lived a perfect, sinless life. He was beat beyond recognition and died a most painful death – six torturous hours hanging on that cross for guilty sinners who put their trust in Him. On the third day He rose from the grave.
Only Jesus can take away your sins. There is nothing you can do (Ephesians 2:8-9). If you have never been born again, please listen to your conscience right now. God is angry with you because of your sins. There is nothing you can do on your own to change that. If you die and unrepentant sinner, then you will be separated from God for all eternity. Don’t foolishly stay where you are at.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10). Turn away from your sins and believe in the Son of God. Confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9-10). Put your faith in Him and obey Him. Receive the free gift of salvation by repenting from your sins and putting your trust in Jesus. Acknowledge that only Jesus can rightly turn away the wrath of God because He bore the sins of guilty sinners while He hung on the cross – that is for guilty sinners who turn away from their sins and submit their lives to Jesus (Romans 3:24-26). Flee from the wrath to come! (Luke 3:7). Repent and believe the Good News of Jesus Christ our Lord.
